Community Conservation Programme
Putting local voices at the centre of conservation
People living closest to wildlife experience conservation most directly. Decisions about land, water, natural resources and wildlife movement affect their safety, livelihoods and everyday lives.
Yet communities can still be left out of the conversations and decisions that shape the landscapes they depend on. When people lack access to information, representation or meaningful platforms for participation, conservation solutions can struggle to earn trust or endure.
CHD’s Community Conservation programme responds by strengthening the role communities play in shaping conservation decisions. We work to ensure conservation is something communities participate in, influence and help lead, rather than something designed elsewhere and delivered to them.
What we do
CHD strengthens community participation in conservation planning, supports community conservation committees and local forums, creates spaces for dialogue between communities and conservation institutions, builds understanding of conservation rights and opportunities, strengthens local leadership and knowledge, and supports community-led responses to conservation challenges.
By giving communities a meaningful role in shaping solutions, CHD helps build conservation approaches that are more trusted, relevant and locally owned.
