echofy Our Work

Protecting a shared landscape

In Amboseli, wildlife, communities and livelihoods depend on the same land, water and natural resources. That means conservation cannot focus on wildlife alone.

CHD works across the ecosystem to strengthen community resilience and build the knowledge and leadership needed for long-term coexistence.

Our programmes work together to strengthen the connections between people, wildlife and the landscapes they share.

echofy The Challenge we address

Amboseli is facing interconnected pressure

The Amboseli landscape depends on a fragile balance between people, land and wildlife. That balance is now under strain.

Shifts from migratory grazing to more permanent settlement are fragmenting rangelands and reducing space for wildlife. Climate change is driving more erratic weather, prolonged droughts and flash floods, further degrading natural resources. Livelihoods are under pressure, increasing the need for practical, climate-resilient solutions. At the same time, social and economic barriers continue to affect the opportunities available to Maasai girls and women.

These challenges are deeply connected, and CHD responds by strengthening community leadership, supporting climate-resilient livelihoods and advancing practical conservation education that helps people and wildlife thrive together.

Climate pressure

Longer dry periods and water scarcity

Habitat loss

Degraded land and fragmented ecosystems

Shrinking corridors

Less room for wildlife to move safely

Livelihood pressure

Greater competition for land and resources

echofy Our Programme Pillars

Four connected ways we strengthen Amboseli

CHD’s programmes work together to address the interconnected pressures shaping Amboseli’s people, wildlife and landscapes.

Protecting wildlife also means restoring habitats, strengthening livelihoods and building the knowledge and leadership that make conservation sustainable.

echofy Wildlife & Coexistence

CHD works with communities and conservation partners to reduce pressure on wildlife, strengthen coexistence and protect the landscapes species depend on.

echofy Environmental Stewardship

CHD supports healthier habitats, stronger soils and more resilient ecosystems across Amboseli by creating woodlands and restoring degraded land with indigenous vegetation.

echofy Climate-Resilient Livelihoods

CHD supports practical livelihood solutions, including climate-smart vertical gardens, that strengthen food security and reduce pressure on natural resources.

echofy Conservation Leadership & Education

Through education, mentorship, citizen participation and youth programmes, CHD helps communities build the knowledge and leadership needed to protect their environment.

echofy How Our Work Connects

One landscape. Connected solutions.

Wildlife conservation, healthy habitats, resilient livelihoods and local leadership are deeply interconnected.

At CHD, our programmes are designed to strengthen one another. Restored habitats create healthier ecosystems for wildlife. Resilient livelihoods reduce pressure on natural resources. Conservation education and leadership build local ownership. Research helps us understand what is changing and where action is needed most.

Together, these approaches create a stronger foundation for long-term coexistence between people and wildlife.

echofy Research and Evidence

Learning from the landscape. Acting on what we find.

Amboseli is constantly changing. Wildlife movement, rainfall, vegetation, land use and community needs all shift over time.

CHD uses secondary research, field observation and local knowledge to understand those changes and improve how we respond. Evidence helps us identify emerging risks, adapt our programmes and make better conservation decisions.

Our research informs action across wildlife conservation, eco -stewardship, livelihoods and conservation education.

echofy What this looks like in practice

Landscape Learning

Observing vegetation, restoration progress and environmental pressures across the ecosystem.

Community Knowledge

Listening to the people who live closest to the landscape and incorporating their experience into conservation decisions.

Programme Learning

Measuring what works, what does not and what needs to change as programmes evolve.

echofy Conservation in Action

See what the work looks like on the ground

Across Amboseli, CHD’s programmes come together in practical ways: communities restoring land, young people learning in the field, landscape learning, and families building more resilient livelihoods.

These stories show how conservation moves from an idea into visible change.

Restoring a Woodland

Follow one degraded site from planting through recovery, showing the people, decisions and ecological changes behind the restoration.

Growing Food in a Dryland Landscape

Show how a family or community is using climate-smart kitchen gardens to strengthen food security with limited water.

Living Alongside Wildlife

Feature a real coexistence story showing how communities and wildlife share the same landscape, what pressures arise, and how local solutions are developed.

echofy Impact Across our Work

What change looks like across Amboseli

CHD tracks progress across restoration, community participation, education, livelihoods and wildlife conservation to understand where our work is making a difference and where we need to adapt.

echofy Stories from the Field

The people and places behind the numbers

Behind every statistic is a person, a place and a story of change.

These stories show what conservation looks like on the ground in Amboseli. Together, they reveal the human experience behind CHD’s impact and the relationships that make lasting conservation possible.

echofy Get Involved

Be part of what happens next

Protecting Amboseli takes communities, partners, researchers, supporters and people willing to invest in long-term conservation.

Whether you choose to support restoration, partner with CHD, visit Oldonyo Musa Eco Camp or contribute to a specific programme, your involvement helps strengthen the people, wildlife and landscapes that make Amboseli unique.
